UV LEDs help reduce the use of antibiotics and increase their effectiveness

UV LEDs are widely used in the disinfection of medical equipment and household products. A Danish research team has further found that treatment combined with UV radiation helps to enhance the effectiveness of bacteria in eradicating antibiotics. Therefore, photo-assisted therapy can reduce the use of antibiotics.

Excessive use of antibiotics can lead to bacterial resistance, and the worst case is an incurable disease. To prevent this, researchers are trying to find alternative therapies to reduce the use of antibiotics. As people become aware of the bactericidal function of UV LEDs, Danish researchers have found that UV radiation at specific wavelengths can eradicate bacteria in biofilms more effectively than antibiotics. In addition, according to the research team, the combination of UV radiation and antibiotics can better eliminate bacteria, resulting in a new concept, light-assisted antibiotics.

In the study, the team used a UV LED with a wavelength range of 249 nm to 338 nm for radiation therapy to kill bacteria on biofilms. The results show that the illumination effect is more significant in the wavelength range of 292~306 nm, and the effect is best at 296 nm. The findings were published in the Science Report on November 5.

By revealing the concept of a light-assisted antibiotic approach, the research team hopes to help develop new therapies that combine light sources and antibiotics to enhance the treatment of biofilm infections.
